    APAOG is proud to share this American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Practice Parameter for the Performance of Limited Obstetric Ultrasound Examinations by Advanced Practice Providers publication. APAOG Board members Aleece Fosnight, PA-C (President) and Kristen Lohser, PA-C (Vice-President) contributed to this publication on behalf of APAOG. 

    This practice parameter has been developed for use by women’s health nurse practitioners (WHNPs), physician assistants in obstetrics and gynecology (PAOGs), and certified nurse-midwives (CNMs)/certified midwives (CMs) performing and interpreting limited obstetric ultrasound studies within their scopes of practice.

    Also in conjunction with AIUM and APAOG were the following organizations: National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH), American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG), and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM).

    Women with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent minimally invasive radical hysterectomy had higher rates of recurrence and worse survival outcomes than women who had open surgery, according to results of two studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

    A single oral dose of the investigational antibiotic zoliflodacin performs as well as intramuscular ceftriaxone (Rocephin, Hoffman-LaRoche) for treatment of uncomplicated urogenital and rectal gonococcal infections, a multicenter phase 2 trial suggests.

    Women who started taking a statin at the age of 50 or older had a significantly lower risk of developing any histologic type of ovarian cancer over the next decade than non-statin users did, according to a large, case-control study. The study by Daniel Cramer, MD, of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues also found that the effect was independent of use of any other concomitant medication.

    Women who test negative for human papillomavirus (HPV) at or after age 55 can likely forego cervical cancer screening for the rest of their lives, a new modeling study suggests. Although the risk for cervical cancer later in life could be decreased by screening women until age 75, the study model showed that women who test HPV DNA negative to 14 high-risk HPV types and stop screening at 55 have a remaining lifetime cervical cancer risk of less than 1 percent, reported Talia Malagon, PhD, of McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues in Lancet Oncology.

    Patients with community-onset urinary tract infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae that are resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins are less likely to receive initial appropriate antibiotic therapy than those with non-resistant infections and more likely to experience relapse within seven days, according to study results published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

    A drug could help slow the progression of some advanced ovarian cancers and extend the time that patients show no signs of disease, according to new clinical trial results. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the drug olaparib (Lynparza) could delay the return of advanced ovarian cancer in some woman whose cancer cells carry a faulty BRCA gene, or stopped the disease from getting worse.
