Despite the availability of numerous contraceptive options, almost half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, creating a substantial negative health and socioeconomic burden on women and their families. The most commonly used contraceptives are dependent on adherence and “perfect use” to be efficacious, while long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) offer the lowest failure rates primarily because they are user-independent. Greater use of the highly effective LARCs may provide one solution to the persistent problem of unplanned pregnancies and improve women’s and children’s health.
